DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1 brake fluids use synthetic chemical bases. They have the advantage of being mixable with each other and not being corrosive to the rubber linings of the brackets and brake cylinders.
DOT 5.1 brake fluid has a boiling point above 260 °C. It is suitable for all vehicles and motorcycles designed to use a synthetic liquid, and is particularly suitable for vehicles equipped with an ABS system, due to the basso cycle time required. DOT 5.1 brake fluid is also a natural choice for high-performance vehicles.
On the contrary, it must not be used in Citroën vehicles that require a mineral-based hydraulic fluid such as the FERODO LHM.
Vehicles equipped with ABS are systematically fitted with DOT indices greater than or equal to 4, knowing that the brake fluid FERODO DOT 5.1 is the most appropriate.
Although it is possible to mix it with other liquids that meet the same characteristics, you should never mix it with DOT 5 liquids based on silicone.
In case of doubt, check the maintenance book of the vehicle.
During braking, the friction of the pads against the discs can create a temperature rise of several hundred degrees. Where the brakes are often stressed, this heat is inevitably transmitted to all circuits and degrades the brake fluid.
That is why it is important to regularly check the state of the ferni fluid (the boiling level and temperature) : every year or every 10 000 km, and to replace it if necessary.
If the water content is too high, it is advisable to replace the brake fluid.
LHM brake fluid should be used according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
